Spring lawn maintenance of your lawn is important to the overall health of your lawn. In London, Ontario and surrounding area, spring clean up should focus on cleaning up winter debris, preparing the lawn for new growth, and addressing any damage from the winter, caused by snow clearing or sitting water etc. This includes tasks like raking, mowing, aerating, and fertilizing, with a potential for overseeding if necessary.

Steps to help create a lush lawn for the summer season.

1. Clean Up:

Remove Debris: Clean up leaves, twigs, and other winter debris to expose the soil and allow sunlight to reach the grass.

Tools to Use: A leaf rake works well to gather all debris on your lawn, if cleaning up a smaller area. A leaf blower or backpack blower can be helpful for larger areas.

2. Mow the Lawn:

First Mow: Aim for a first cut in early to mid-May, depending on the weather and growth.

Regular Mowing: Establish a regular mowing schedule, ideally weekly, to keep the grass at a manageable length.

3. Aerate:

Improve Soil Health: Lawn aeration is the process of puncturing the soil, by creating small holes or slices in the soil, which is crucial for allowing air, water, and nutrients to penetrate the roots, especially in compacted areas of your lawn.

Core Aeration: Consider core aeration for a more thorough job of soil improvement. This process is a type of aeration that extracts small plugs of soil from a lawn to increase air flow.

Tools to Use: Using tools such as a pitchfork, manual aerator, or a power aerator that removes soil cores, are the best tools for this task.

4. Dethatch (Optional):

Remove Matted Grass: Lawn dethatching primarily removes the thatch layer, a buildup of dead grass and organic matter between the soil and live grass blades. This process also improves soil drainage, and allows better penetration of water, air, and nutrients, and promotes healthier grass growth.

Tools to use: A lawn scarifier is the best tool to help you to thatch lawns. Both use a vertically rotating cylinder and teeth-like blades to penetrate and remove dense thatch. If doing the job manually a dethatching rake could also be the tool of choice.

Best Time: The best time to dethatch is when the lawn is actively growing and the soil is moderately moist, early spring or early fall would be your best times to complete this task.

5. Fertilize:

Spring Lawn Feed: Apply a spring fertilizer to provide the grass with the necessary nutrients for growth. Be sure to follow instructions as to how to apply the fertilizer for best results, to be sure not to over apply and risk burning your lawn.

Soil Test: Consider a soil test to determine the specific needs of your lawn. A soil test can help determine the nutrient content and pH level of your soil which can help to avoid over-fertilization, and diagnose potential problems.

Fertilizer Types: Look for fertilizers such as 25-10-10 which is a great spring fertilizer or 16-16-16 which works well as an all purpose fertilizer at Baseline Nurseries.

6. Overseeding (If needed):

Fill in Bare Patches: Overseeding involves spreading new grass seed over an existing lawn to fill in bare spots, thicken the turf, and potentially introduce better grass varieties. It’s a great way to revive a thin or damaged lawn without starting from scratch, several varieties of grass seed are also available at Baseline Nurseries.

Timing: In London Ontario, Spring, particularly from April to early May, is a suitable time for overseeding. Before the summer heat sets in. Late summer or early fall (late August to mid-October) is also an excellent time to overseed, as the cool temperatures and adequate moisture promote seed germination.

7. Weed and Pest Control: spot check for weeds and insects

Manual Removal: Pull any broadleaf weeds by hand.

Annual weeds: prevent flowering by mowing and/or hand pulling, to reduce the spread of these know weeds.

Grass weeds: apply a pre-emergent (prevents germination) treatment. Try corn gluten meal or something similar, we do carry this product at Baseline Nurseries as well.

Grass Seed: Varieties that contain Perennial rye grass mix will minimize chinch bugs, bluegrass billbugs and sod webworms.

Keep Control of the Critters: Apply nematodes (available at Baseline Nurseries) for grubs, to prevent rodents such as skunks and racoons digging up your lawn to find their lunch.

8. Mower Maintenance:

Tune-Up: Ensure your lawnmower is in good working order before the start of the season. The best time to do this is during the long winter months.

Blade Sharpening: Sharpen the mower blades for a clean cut. A good rule of thumb is to sharpen, every 20 to 25 hours of use, or at least once per mowing season. The best practice is to take care of this task about twice a year for homeowners with average lawns, and potentially more frequently for larger lawns or lawns with rough condition.

9. Watering:

Deep Watering: Water deeply with penetration of 2.5 cm or 1 inch, a good deep watering less frequently is better than several shallow waterings. Water before 10:00 am if possible, as this will help avoid evaporation. Follow any regional water restrictions implemented in your area.

Or Let the Lawn go Dormant: You can let a healthy lawn go dormant during extended dry periods. It can survive four to six weeks without adequate water.

If you decide to let the lawn, go dormant, water only during an extreme drought or if lawn is under stress or renovation to begin with.

If your lawn is dormant:

Check regularly for insect pests!

Keep traffic off

Stop mowing!

Do not fertilize!

By following the month-by-month guide below, you can help your lawn thrive in the spring and enjoy a beautiful, healthy lawn for the summer, and into the fall.

1. Timing is Key

Fall Seeding (Late Summer/Early Autumn): The best time to seed for cool-season grasses (like Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, and perennial

ryegrass) is in late summer/early fall (August to mid-September).

Why Fall? Milder temperatures and less competition from weeds make it easier for grass seedlings to establish.

Spring Seeding: If you miss the fall window, you can also seed in early spring (around March).

2. Soil Preparation

Weed Control: Before seeding, control existing weeds and debris.

Soil Testing: Consider testing your soil to determine pH levels and nutrient needs.

Tilling and Raking: Till the soil to a depth of 15-20 cm, then rake to create a level, firm seedbed.

Topdressing: Add topsoil, compost, or peat moss to improve soil structure and fertility.

Rolling: Roll the seedbed after raking to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.

3. Seeding

Choose the Right Seed: Select a grass seed mix suitable for Ontario’s climate and your specific needs (sun/shade, traffic, etc.).

Use a Lawn Spreader: Use a lawn spreader for even seed distribution. Move across your area in a vertical as well as horizontal direction as pictured here.

Seed Rate: Follow the seed rate recommendations on the seed package.

Rake Lightly: After seeding, lightly rake the area to cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil.

Maintain Moisture: Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged, until the grass seedlings are established.

Mow Regularly: Once the grass has grown to a height of 10-12 cm, mow it regularly, but don’t cut it too short.

Fertilize: Apply a slow-release fertilizer to promote healthy growth.

Weed Control: Continue to monitor for and control weeds.

5. Additional Tips to maintain your lawn

Aerate: Aerate your lawn to improve drainage and allow air and water to reach the roots.

Overseeding: Overseeding (adding more grass seed to an existing lawn) can help fill in thin areas.

Consider Sodding: Sodding (laying pre-grown grass sod) is another option for repairing damaged lawns.

Protect from Pests and Diseases: Be vigilant for pests and diseases and take appropriate action.

Understanding Hydrangeas: Different Varieties and What They Need

Before diving into tips for growing and pruning hydrangeas, it is important to understand the diverse types available. Hydrangeas come in several varieties, and each type has its unique growth habits, blooming schedules, and pruning requirements. Here is a breakdown of the most popular types of hydrangeas:

1. Bigleaf Hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla):

Characteristics: These hydrangeas are famous for their large, round blooms that can be pink, blue, purple, or even white. The colour is influenced by the soil’s pH level—more acidic soils produce blue flowers, while alkaline soils yield pink blooms.

Best for: Part-shade to full sun.

Pruning tip: Bigleaf hydrangeas bloom on old wood, meaning they set buds in the fall. Therefore, prune them right after they bloom, and avoid heavy pruning in late winter or early spring.

2. Panicle Hydrangeas (Hydrangea paniculata):

Characteristics: These hydrangeas feature cone-shaped flowers that start off white and gradually change to pink or red as the season progresses.

Best for: Full sun to partial shade.

Pruning tip: Panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood, which means they can be pruned back in late winter or early spring to encourage fresh growth and large blooms.

3. Smooth Hydrangeas (Hydrangea arborescens):

Characteristics: Known for their round, white flower heads, the most popular variety is ‘Annabelle.’ They thrive in both sun and partial shade.

Best for: Part-shade to full sun.

Pruning tip: Like panicle hydrangeas, smooth hydrangeas bloom on new wood. Prune them in late winter or early spring for a healthy burst of growth.

4. Oakleaf Hydrangeas (Hydrangea quercifolia):

How to Grow Hydrangeas: A Step-by-Step Guide

Growing hydrangeas is fairly easy, but to get the best results, you need to follow some basic steps to create the ideal environment for them to thrive. Here are the key tips for success:

Choose the Right Location

Hydrangeas are adaptable, but they do best when planted in a location with the proper balance of sunlight and shade. For most types, a location with morning sun and afternoon shade works well. Too much sun can cause wilting, while too much shade can result in fewer blooms. If you are growing hydrangeas with blue flowers, aim for slightly acidic soil to enhance the colour.

Prepare the Soil

Hydrangeas love moist, well-drained soil. Test the soil’s pH before planting—hydrangeas tend to prefer a slightly acidic to neutral pH (between 5.5 and 7.0). If you are looking to change the bloom colour of your hydrangeas, you can adjust the soil’s pH by adding amendments. For example, adding sulfur can acidify the soil and turn your blooms blue, while lime can alkalinize the soil and turn them pink.

Before planting, mix in organic matter, such as compost, to enrich the soil and improve its drainage capabilities.

Watering and Mulching

Hydrangeas need consistent moisture, especially during hot summer months. Water them regularly, but avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. A layer of mulch around the base of the plant helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Mulch also prevents the roots from drying out, which is especially important for newly planted hydrangeas.

Fertilizing

Hydrangeas are moderate feeders. Use a balanced fertilizer with equal parts nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (such as a 10-10-10 formula) in the spring before new growth begins. Avoid heavy fertilization, as it can encourage too much foliage growth at the expense of blooms. For blue hydrangeas, consider using a fertilizer specifically formulated for acid-loving plants.

Pruning Hydrangeas: A Guide to Perfect Blooms

Pruning is one of the most important aspects of hydrangea care. The timing and method depend on the variety you are growing. Here is a closer look at how to prune hydrangeas based on their type:

Bigleaf Hydrangeas: These bloom on old wood, so it is important to prune them right after they finish flowering in late summer or early fall. Avoid heavy pruning in winter or early spring as this can remove the buds that will bloom the following year.

Panicle and Smooth Hydrangeas: These hydrangeas bloom on new wood, so they can be pruned back in late winter or early spring before new growth starts. Cutting them back in early spring encourages strong growth and large blooms.

Oakleaf Hydrangeas: Prune these in late winter to early spring before new growth appears. Like Bigleaf hydrangeas, they bloom on old wood, so minimize pruning to maintain their shape while preserving the bloom potential.

Deadheading and Cutting Back

Deadheading, or removing spent blooms, helps improve the appearance of your hydrangea bush, but it is not always necessary for the plant’s health. Cutting back dead flowers can make your hydrangeas look neat and tidy, but if you are trying to preserve the seed heads or plan to cut some flowers for arrangements, you can leave them intact.

Winter Care

In colder climates like London, Ontario, hydrangeas need a bit of winter protection to survive the harsh cold. For Bigleaf and Oakleaf hydrangeas, consider adding a layer of mulch around the base to protect the roots from freezing. You can also wrap the plants with burlap or other breathable material to shield them from winter winds and frost.

The key to growing a healthy tree begins with proper planting procedures. Choosing the right tree for the right spot, is perhaps the most important factor that will determine whether or not the tree will survive and thrive. Watering is a critical component to the health of your tree, be sure to talk to our staff about watering when you are discussing tree possibilities. Many of the nutrients trees need are things they cannot consume directly through their roots, the activity of soil biota make nutrients within organic matter available overtime.
Using products like Root Rescue and Soil Activator allow for essential nutrients to be taken up by the roots, promoting optimal health of the tree.

1. Preparing the Area- Skim off the turf of an area about 4’ in diameter where you are going to plant your tree

2. Digging the Hole – The size of the hole depends on the size of the root ball. Most of our large trees require a hole about 3 ½’ wide and 2’ deep. An easy way to measure and see if you have dug to the appropriate depth is by laying a shovel over the hole, then placing another shovel upright in the hole, and using that measurement against the size of the root ball. Digging the hole is easiest when you have the tree there with you.

The importance of planting a tree at the correct depth cannot be over emphasized. Now that the hole is the correct size, scruff up the sides of it a bit – this makes it easier for the roots to penetrate the surrounding soil.

3. Putting the Tree in the Hole-Hopefully your tree isn’t too far away. Carefully and gently roll the tree into the hole. Backfill with a few scoops of soil so that the tree is standing relatively straight, and make sure that it is situated the way you want it. This is your only chance to change its position/orientation!!!

4. Backfilling- At this point, only backfill about halfway. Backfill around the tree with the previous existing soil combined with a few shovelfuls of peat moss, and a few handfuls of Bone meal.** An easy way to mix these is by depositing a few shovelfuls of the peat moss on the mounds of soil that resulted from digging the hole, and shaking over a few handfuls of Bone meal. This way, as you return that existing soil as backfill, all three components kind of mix together on their own.**

Once you have backfilled about halfway, and stomped in around the root ball, have another look at the tree. Make sure that it is nice and straight.

At this point, cut all the ropes that are looped through the wire basket and around the tree–get them out of there. Now there are 5 wire loops that kind of stick out above the rest, bend these loops back into the hole–essentially getting them below grade. Stepping on them works well to do this. There is burlap around the trunk of the tree and covering the root ball–untie it from around the trunk and pull it back so that the top of the root ball is totally exposed. Cut off this portion of the burlap.

Continue to backfill and stomp around the root ball until you are level with the top of it. There is no need to pile soil on top of the root ball, as that would bury it too deeply. KEEP STOMPING to eliminate all large pockets of air. If your root ball is slightly above grade, simply create a gradual slope away from the edge of the root ball to level ground.

5. Staking- Use wooden or metal stakes that are at least 6’ tall, pound them into the ground about a foot deep and about 12 to 16 inches away from the trunk, outside of the root ball/wire basket. Make sure the stakes are securely in place, the first is placed upwind from the prevailing wind direction and the second, opposite the first stake. Stakes should be attached to the tree with broad, smooth, flexible ties(biodegradable is preferred, e.g. jute twine)that allow trunk movement but stabilize the root ball. Position the ties well below the first set of branches, attach the ties as low as is effective for stabilizing the root ball. Ties and stakes should generally be removed after one year of growth.

6. Mulching – Mulching around the base of the tree is an important step. Mulch to a depth of about 3”, and a diameter of about 3’. Be sure that the mulch is kept away from the trunk by an inch or two – piling mulch against the trunk will cause trunk rot and encourage rodent damage.

7. Trunk Protection- Tree guards or wraps may be required if there is a threat of damage from line trimmers, rodents, deer, rabbits or sunscald. Winter protection may be needed for evergreens or trees in windy areas, speak with our staff for great advice.

BEST TIME OF YEAR TO PLANT A LARGE CALLIPER TREE

In climates such as ours in London, Ontario. The ideal time to plant trees in general, is either in the spring and fall. Planting during these times allows trees to establish roots while the weather is mild and before the summer heat or winter cold sets in. During spring, the soil is warming up which helps in root growth, and in fall, the cool weather supports the settling of roots without the stress of hot weather. That being said, trees can be planted in the Summer as well, if planted during the warmer/drier part of the year they generally require extra care, extra watering and maintenance may be required to avoid dehydration.

All newly planted trees do require a significant amount of care and consistent monitoring, over the first full year or two, until they are established.

IF YOU ARE PLANTING IN CLAY. . .

Planting a tree in heavy clay soil requires a bit more work. For best results, dig the hole about 12 to 16“ wider than the root ball. Really scruff up the sides and bottom of the hole to eliminate any smooth surfaces. Plant the tree so that the trunk flare is 2 to 4” above grade – this will allow water to drain away and prevent drowning. Back fill with the previous existing soil mixed with some peat moss and bone meal. The idea is to get the tree accustomed to its new soil–not to over amend the surrounding area.

Trees make our world beautiful and provide us with many obvious benefits – shade, privacy, increased property values, shelter and food for small animals, even a place for childhood tree houses. Besides these obvious benefits, trees also contribute to the health of our planet. They clean the air by giving off oxygen, storing carbon, and recycling moisture into the atmosphere. Trees help prevent soil erosion, help modify temperatures, and act as wind breaks

MAINTENANCE AND FINAL THOUGHTS ON NEWLY PLANTED TREES

Be sure to select the right variety of tree for your chosen location, (we can assist you with this At Baseline Nurseries), as well as provide optimal soil for the new tree. Maintenance for your newly planted tree is the biggest key to success. While large calliper trees can give you instant gratification in your landscape project, as they add height and bring your yard or garden to life immediately when planted, they do require more maintenance than smaller plant material generally speaking. Don’t make the mistake of planting your tree and walking away, assuming it will be able to fend for itself. It will require extra care until established, so be sure to check the soil moisture regularly, keeping in mind that overwatering can be just as damaging as underwatering to a newly planted tree. Proper planting and maintenance in the first year or two for your tree, are so very important, if you provide the care it needs early on, your tree will give you the shade and beauty you are looking for in your yard, for years to come.

Clematis vines are popular for their vibrant colours and can be distinguished by their large-flowered hybrids and smaller species. Clematis thrive in fertile, well-drained soil and require regular watering and fertilization. They prefer sunny locations with cool roots, which can be achieved using mulch or shade from other plants. Pruning varies by variety, based on blooming habits, and clematis vines need support like a trellis. Planting multiple varieties ensures continuous blooms.

HOW TO CHOOSE CLEMATIS FOR CONTINUOUS BLOOMS

To achieve continuous blooms with clematis, choose and plant different varieties that bloom at different times of the year. Here’s how you can proceed:

Select Early Spring Bloomers: These clematis varieties bloom on last year’s growth. By including these in your garden, you can begin the blooming season early. They typically require pruning only to remove dead or weak branches after flowering.

Include Mid-Spring to Early Summer Bloomers: These plants bloom on new growth in May, June, or July. Light pruning to strong buds in April will promote branching and fuller blooms. These varieties continue the show as the early spring bloomers are finishing.

Add Late Season Bloomers: These varieties ensure that your garden remains colourful through the late summer into fall. They can be pruned back hard in early April, encouraging fresh growth and blooms later in the year.

Mix Various Types: Integrate both large-flowered hybrids and smaller-flowered species for diversity in size and colour. This not only covers different blooming seasons but also adds varying forms and vibrant colours to the garden.

By strategically choosing and planting clematis varieties that bloom at different times, you can enjoy a garden full of continuous colour throughout the growing season.

In climates such as ours in London, Ontario. The best time to plant clematis is either in the early spring or early fall. Planting during these times allows clematis to establish roots while the weather is mild and before the summer heat or winter cold sets in. During spring, the soil is warming up which helps in root growth, and in fall, the cool weather supports the settling of roots without the stress of hot weather.

How should I care for clematis in different seasons?

Caring for clematis involves different tasks and considerations throughout the seasons to ensure healthy growth and vibrant blooms:

Spring:

Planting: If planting new clematis, spring is a suitable time.

Pruning: Identify the clematis group and prune accordingly. Early spring bloomers need minimal pruning, while others may require more.

Fertilizing: Start fertilizing as new growth appears to support robust growth and flowering.

Summer:

Watering: Ensure regular watering, especially in dry periods, to keep the root ball moist.

Shade: Provide shade to the plant’s roots, either with mulch or companion plants, to help maintain cooler soil temperatures.

Support: Check and secure trellises or supports, as clematis vines can grow vigorously in summer.

Fall:

Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch to protect roots through the winter.

Pruning: For late-blooming varieties, prune hard to encourage growth in the upcoming season.

Fertilizing: Stop fertilizing as fall approaches to allow the plant to begin dormancy.

Winter:

Protection: Some varieties may benefit from additional protection, especially in harsh climates. Consider covering roots with an extra layer of mulch or insulating material.

Pruning: Avoid pruning in winter as this can stimulate growth during cold periods, which can be damaging.

By attending to these seasonal tasks, your clematis will continue to thrive and offer stunning displays throughout the year.

Here are some tips for preparing soil for planting clematis:

Select Well-Drained Soil: Clematis prefer fertile, well-drained soil to thrive. Ensure that your planting area does not retain too much water.

Enhance with Enriched Soil Mix: Dig a hole four to five inches deeper than the root ball depth and fill with an enriched soil mix. This improved soil will support healthy root growth.

Adjust Soil pH if Needed: Clematis benefit from slightly alkaline conditions. You can achieve this by applying horticultural lime around the root ball regularly.

Mulching: Use mulch to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and keep the roots cool.

Fertilization: Regularly incorporate organic fertilizer to maintain soil structure and nutrients, supporting robust plant growth.

Consistent Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during dry periods, to prevent the root ball from drying out.

HOW TO PLANT CLEMATIS IN DIFFERENT EXPOSURE CONDITIONS

When planting clematis in different exposure conditions, consider the following tips to ensure healthy growth:

Sunny Locations:

Clematis generally prefer sunny spots where they can bloom profusely. Ensure that the top of the plant receives adequate sunlight for optimal flowering.

However, provide shade for the base of the plant to keep the roots cool. This can be achieved by planting nearby leafy shrubs, perennials, or using mulch.

North- or East-Facing Exposures:

Some clematis varieties can adapt to lower light conditions found in north- or east-facing exposures. These varieties may still bloom well despite reduced sunlight.

Choose clematis varieties known for their adaptability to these exposures, such as the ‘Nelly Moser’.

Hot Climates:

In excessively hot environments, clematis may suffer. Provide afternoon shade if possible to protect them from intense heat.

Optimize watering to prevent the root ball from drying out and use mulch to help regulate soil temperature.

HOW TO PRUNE CLEMATIS PLANTS

Pruning clematis varies based on the bloom time of each variety. Understanding the blooming habits is crucial for effective pruning:

Early Spring Bloomers: These varieties flower on last year’s growth. Pruning should be minimal, focusing on removing dead or weak branches after flowering to tidy up the plant.

Mid-Spring to Summer Bloomers: These bloom on new growth in May, June, or July. Light pruning to strong buds in April is recommended to promote branching.

Late Season Bloomers: Blooming from July through the fall, these can be pruned back hard in early April to just above a good set of buds, typically around 30 cm above the ground.

Proper support like a trellis or archway is also essential for clematis growth, and pruning helps manage their size while encouraging healthy blooms.

GUIDELINES FOR WATERING CLEMATIS WITH COMPANIONS

Watering clematis with companion plants requires careful attention to ensure that both the clematis and its companions thrive. Here are some guidelines:

Consistent Moisture:

Clematis needs regular watering to prevent the root ball from drying out, especially during dry spells. Companion plants like hostas and ferns also appreciate consistent moisture, making them well-suited as partners.

Deep Watering:

Water deeply to ensure that the moisture reaches the roots of the clematis and companion plants. This encourages deep root growth and enhances drought resistance.

Morning Watering:

Water in the morning to reduce evaporation and allow the plants to absorb moisture before the day’s heat. This helps both clematis and companions maintain hydration throughout the day.

Mulching:

Use mulch around the base of your clematis and companion plants to conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.

Avoid Overwatering:

While moisture is essential, overwatering can lead to root rot. Ensure good drainage and check soil moisture levels before watering.

Adjust for Environment:

Depending on the exposure conditions (sunny, shaded, etc.), adjust the watering frequency accordingly. Shadier areas may require less frequent watering compared to sun-exposed spots.

By following these guidelines, you can maintain a healthy, flourishing garden with clematis and its companion plants.

Preparing the Area- Skim off the turf of an area about 4’ in diameter where you are going to plant your tree

Mulching – Mulching around the base of the tree is an important step. Mulch to a depth of about 3”, and a diameter of about 3’. Be sure that the mulch is kept away from the trunk by an inch or two – piling mulch against the trunk will cause trunk rot and encourage rodent damage.

Trunk Protection- Tree guards or wraps may be required if there is a threat of damage from line trimmers, rodents, deer, rabbits or sunscald. Winter protection may be needed for evergreens or trees in windy areas, speak with our staff for great advice.

Soon after this has occurred, apply nematodes.

It is important to read the instructions provided with the nematodes you have purchased, keep in mind the following tips. The best time to apply nematodes is when the soil has been saturated with rain or a good amount of irrigation. It is easiest for nematodes to migrate through the soil to the next white grub when the soil is moist. Another recommendation is that nematodes be applied on an overcast day or at dusk as nematodes are organisms that don’t fare well when exposed to UV rays.

If you have to take a break from applications for any length of time, before continuing; give your nematode solution a gentle stir before as they will settle to the bottom of your container or sprayer. You can choose to use a sprayer applicator that can be found at reputable garden centres, just be sure that there isn’t a screen or filter present. The filter or screen will harm their delicate bodies as they are pushed through the sprayer. Another method of application is to fill a 5 gallon pail with lukewarm water and stir the nematodes in gently. Go around to the effected or all areas of your property and pour the mixture out using a pitcher or watering can. The nematodes will find the way to their food source.

Since nematodes don’t overwinter in our climate, you will have to reapply every year to gain effective control if you are experiencing damage from grubs in your lawn or garden.

Adult forms of grubs

You can also over seed your lawn in the spring and fall with Regenerating Perennial Rye. Turf grass varieties such as this, have a thicker root system which is less desirable to grubs and regenerates itself faster from damage than other turf types.

Applying a turf fertilizer in the spring or fall will help establish root growth and aid in recovery after grub damage. Consider using a blend like 8-32-16.

Placing traps for adult beetles does aid in removing a portion of the adult population that would have otherwise laid eggs in your lawn and garden. Although unsightly, they do aid minimizing the issue for the following season.

klem’uh-tis For clematis, there is a general rule: “If it flowers before June, don’t prune.”

There are three groups.

Group 1: Clematis bloom early in spring and don’t need pruning.

Group 2: Clematis flowering early summer and are pruned to framework.

Group 3: Clematis flower in late summer and should be pruned to about 12” or to a specific height to suit the landscape.

This very diverse group of lovely, ornamental vines will entice you to garden on the vertical plane. There’s a Clematis for virtually every situation: grow the shorter and non-climbing types through shrub Roses and small trees and cover an arbor or a trellis with the taller varieties. The long flowering season begins with the compact alpinas and macropetalas in early spring, progresses through early summer with the large flowered hybrids, continues through late summer with the boisterous texensis and viticella varieties, and concludes with the exuberant and infallible Clematis paniculata that will literally cover an unsightly structure or arbor in one season.

Light/Watering:

• In general, these lush vines like at least 6 hours of sun. Some varieties are adapted to partial shade and all benefit from afternoon shade in the South.

• Clematis prefers a cool root run, so lay flat stones at its base, or plant annuals or shallow-rooted perennials around them.

• Regular watering is desirable, especially during seasonal dry periods. Clematis is deep-rooted, so water thoroughly.

Fertilizer/Soil and pH:

• Clematis is at its best in rich soils with good drainage. It prefers a neutral soil, so check pH and add lime if needed.

• Dig a generous hole and amend soil as conditions indicate, avoiding fresh manures.

• Plant the crown of your plant 3–4″ below the soil surface; this will protect dormant buds that will provide new growth if the existing stem(s) are injured.

• Provide support immediately or plants will languish.

• Clematis is a heavy feeder; supply a low nitrogen fertilizer such as 5-10-10 in spring, when the buds are about 2″ long. Alternate feedings every 4 to 6 weeks with a balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer. Continue this alternate feeding until the end of the growing season.

Pests/Diseases:

• Clematis is susceptible to fungi that can cause the vine to suddenly wilt and turn brown or black. Carefully prune out all diseased tissue and destroy; disinfect your pruners with a bleach solution. Generally this disease is not fatal, especially if you have planted the vine correctly, as dormant buds will send up new growth from the crown.

• Handle gently when planting and be careful when cultivating, as physical injury to the stems can cause them to wilt and die.

Companions:

• Plant these lovely vines at the base of shrubs and small trees; they will weave their way through the supporting foliage and extend the season of interest with their showy blooms.

Use the woody structure of Shrub Roses to support the non-clinging Clematis varieties; for instance, grow purple or blue Clematis through a yellow Shrub Rose for a fabulous contrast. Remember that a supporting woody plant will compete with the Clematis for water and nutrients and adjust your culture as necessary.

Reflowering:

• To promote reflowering for late season bloomers during the growing season, the vine can be cut by one-half after the main bloom period.

• Varieties that flower on old and new wood will often throw out a few blooms at the end of the growing season.

Transplanting:

• Young vines may be moved with plenty of soil as long as they are watered religiously.

• Depending on variety, cut back lightly or severely before moving in early spring.

Pruning:

• Dead or damaged stems may be removed at any time.

• Early in the first spring after planting, prune the stems of all Clematis varieties down to the lowest pair of healthy buds. Thereafter, prune to control size and shape or to encourage more profuse bloom.

• Flowering tends to decline on stems that are four or more years old, so it’s a good idea to prune out very old stems periodically in early spring. This pruning helps produce more compact plants with flowers closer to eye level. Sometimes, on older vines, the flowering is confined to a small area at the tops of the stems.

• If you wish, you can rejuvenate old plants by cutting them back severely, to about 18″. Wait until after the first flush of bloom to perform the surgery.

Clematis are divided into pruning groups as follows:

Group I plants bloom on old wood and require no pruning except to control size, in which case prune lightly after flowering back to a pair of healthy buds. Group I varieties include Clematis alpina ‘Stolwijk Gold’ and Clematis montana ‘Mayleen.’

Group II plants bloom first on old wood and then again on new; prune lightly in early spring to shape and remove weak growth and then prune after bloom if desired.

End of Season Care:

• Plants may be mulched, but take care to keep mulch material away from the crowns and stems of the plants.

• Check to make sure that the vines of Group I and II plants are tied securely to supports to withstand winter winds.

Calendar of Care

Early Spring:

• Fertilize with 5-10-10 when new growth reaches two inches.

• If you need to move a plant, transplant young vines now.

• Wait until new growth appears before removing dead or damaged stems and before pruning as required by variety: leave Group I Clematis alone; prune Group II plants lightly to shape and remove weak growth; cut Group III varieties back to 12 inches above the ground, or higher if you desire taller vines.

• If this is the first spring after planting, prune stems of all varieties down to the lowest pair of healthy buds to encourage strong growth and new stems.

Mid-Spring:

• Continue feeding every month, alternating 5-10-10 with 10-10-10.

• Plant annuals at base of plants if unprotected by flat stones to allow for a cool root zone.

• Gently tie vines to supports as they grow.

Late Spring:

• Mulch if desired but keep material away from crowns and stems.

• Water thoroughly if season is dry.

• Cultivate around vines with care as physical injury will cause wilting and death of injured stems.

• Continue to guide new growth by tying to supports as needed.

• Lightly prune Group I Clematis immediately after flowering to shape the vines if needed.

Summer:

• Watch for signs of fungal wilt and remove and destroy affected plant parts if it occurs, then sterilize pruners with bleach solution.

• Group II Clematis may be pruned back by one-half after main flush of bloom to encourage strong growth and new flowers.

• Continue to water if conditions indicate.

Fall:

• Check to be certain that the vines of Group I and II varieties are tied securely to supports to withstand winter wind and snow.

• Mulch if desired, keeping material away from the crown.

• If the season is dry, water well and deeply.

Survey the Yard: Make note of tree limbs that should be removed or cabled, especially those that overhang structures. Hire an arborist to maintain large trees. Cut down last year’s perennial foliage, and toss it into the compost pile. Rake mulch from beds planted with bulbs before foliage appears, and refresh mulch in other planting areas after soil warms. Check fences, steps, and pathways for disrepair caused by freezing and thawing.

Prune Trees and Shrubs: Remove dead, damaged, and diseased branches from woody plants. Thin and trim summer-blooming shrubs such as spirea, hydrangea, and hibiscus. Prune cold-damaged wood after plants resume spring growth. Prune spring-blooming shrubs and trees such as lilacs and forsythia after flowering.

Take a Soil Test: Check soil pH with a home soil- test kit, taking several samples from different planting areas for an accurate reading. Enrich soil as necessary.

Prepare New Beds: Clear the planting area as soon as soil can be worked, removing sod or weeds and debris. Spread a 4-inch layer of compost or well-rotted manure and any amendments over soil, and cultivate it to a depth of 10 to 12 inches with a spading fork.

Plant: Plant bare-root trees, shrubs, and perennials such as hostas and daylilies by early spring. Choose a cool, cloudy day if possible. Transplant container-grown plants anytime during the growing season; be sure to water them thoroughly.

Fertilize: Apply balanced fertilizer (16-16-16 or 5-1-5), or other soil amendments recommended by soil-test results around trees and shrubs when new growth appears. Spread high-acid fertilizer and pine-needle mulch around acid-loving shrubs like azaleas and hollies. Begin fertilizing perennials when active growth resumes.

Mulch Beds: Apply a 2-3” layer of shredded pine mulch to help maintain moisture, decrease weed growth and improve soil conditions.
